Ears and Nose Pirecing

The best ear piercing and nose piercing salon in Melbourne.

Earring are now essential accessories for every woman as much as rings bracelets.

Fashion always evolves and nose studs become more popular every day. It might be hazardous to claim that nose studs are now classical. But what it is indubitable is that two or ever three erring holes in your ears will allow you to change earrings as you please.

Nose Piercing

Nostril piercing is a body piercing practice originated in India and Nepal. In India, the preferred position for the piercing is the outside on the left nostril as this is supposed to make childbirth easier. In India piercings were regarded as a mark of beauty and social standing as well as a Hindu's honor to Parvathi the goddess of marriage during the 16th century.

Nose Piercing is still popular in India, Middle Eastern and Arab countries. Nostril piercing is also part of the Australian Aboriginal culture. Nose Piercing is now popular in many western industrialized nations. It is sufficient to refer to the punks culture and subsequent youth cultures in the '80s and '90s. Today, nose piercing is popular in the United States, UK, Canada, the Caribbean, Australia and Europe, with piercings being performed on either the left or right nostril.

Both men and women have nostril piercings, though they are much more common on women. There are several different types of nostril rings. Among the most popular are the loop, the stud with an L-bar closure, the stud with a ball closure, and the stud with a flat backing.

It's only been in the last two decades that nose piercing has gained a mainstream popularity in Western culture. Presently, it is the second most-popular body piercing desired by teens and young adults.

Interesingly a recent study published in United States in 2007 shows that 87% of employees interviwed belived that having piercings or tattoos would not reduce their chance of being hired.

Another study carried in 2001 by a group of 20 sociology majors at Columbia University in 2001, surveyed 100 New Yorkers looking for a job, 50 with nostril/cartilage piercings and 50 with eyebrow/tongue piercings. The result was that 50 people with nostril and eye brow piercings, received jobs, while those with eye brow and tongue could not.

Odyssey Nails Hair & Beauty Code of Practice for ear piercing and nose piercing in the salon

Odyssey Nails Hair & Beauty is a ear and nose piercing salon duly registered for skin penetration with the Council of the city of Melbourne. The Council assessed our procedures before issuing any permit.

We use the "Inverness Method" to pierce ears. This involves the use of a gun, into which are loaded pre-sterilised studs and butterflies. There is no personal contact with the stud prior to discharge and therefore there is no real risk of contamination in normal use. Where double packs of studs are used, if only one ear is pierced then the remaining stud must be disposed of. We keep accurate records of any piercing we perform.

You MUST purchase our antiseptic spray and you MUST use it regularly, since we can not be held accountable for your negligence.

We strictly follow the following procedure:

  • Wash and dry hands at beginning of session.
  • Seat customer, mark ear lobes, preferably with gentian violet pen.
  • Place clean paper tissue or towel on table top, or customer's shoulder.
  • Clean customer's ears with spirit swab (eg. med i-swab).
  • Wash operator's hands again and dry with a paper towel.
  • Open pre-sterilised pack and pierce ears.
  • Adjust tightness of earring in each ear using clean tissue to hold the earring. (This does not apply to nose piercing)
  • Dispose of plastic capsules or holders, swabs, and paper tissues and towel in plastic-lined bin.
  • Wash the hands again and dry with a paper towel.
  • Explain after-care to customer.

After piercing care

For proper healing and satisfaction with your newly pierced ears or nose, follow these easy cleaning instructions.

Please note: many of the problems arising from ear or nose piercing result from poor care after the piercing.

  • Cleanse the piercing twice a day.
  • Be sure to cleanse especially after shampooing, swimming or exercising.
  • Use our specially formulated Antiseptic when cleansing. You may use isopropyl alcohol as an alternative temporary substitution for Ear and Nose Care Antiseptic.
  • Always cleanse hands prior to touching your ears or nose.
  • Use a clean cotton swab to apply the Antiseptic.
  • Push the earring gently forward and backward, swabbing between your ear or nose and the earring or nose ring.
  • Rotate the stud twice daily to prevent it from adhering to the ea or nose.
  • Cover your ears or nose when using hair spray or perfume.
  • DO NOT remove earrings before the specified time: Earlobe Piercing: Keep earrings in for 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Be careful that earrings don't get caught when brushing your hair or pulling clothes over your head.
  • Take extra care when exercising or playing sports.

Other Issues

  • Bacterial Infections
Symptoms include increased pain, increased redness and an increase in the amount and thickness of the discharge. The infected discharge is usually thick and yellow, green or grey and may have an unusual odour. Consult with your physician or piercer and do not remove the jewelry until you seek advice. Removing the jewelry may prevent pus draining and cause an abscess to form.
  • Cleaning Agents
Never use alcohol swabs, Betadine, chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide, methylated spirit, or tea tree oil to clean your piercing. These do kill bacteria but they also destroy your healing flesh. The killed flesh then becomes easily infected.
  • Keloids
Helix piercings are prone to keloid formation, and much more so when a piercing gun is used.
  • Lavender Oil
This essential oil lubricates the piercing and is reputed to reduce scar tissue and prevent tightening. It must be used in its dilute form, a drop applied to the piercing with a cotton bud, the excess removed, and then the jewelry moved back and forth through the piercing. The correct dilution is 10 drops lavender oil in 15mls grapeseed or sweet almond oil.
  • Sleeping
Consider wearing a small patch of hypoallergenic tape over alar piercings at night for the first week or two. They can easily become dislodged during sleep.
  • Smoking
  • Smoking slows healing by suppressing your immune system and blood circulation to the skin
  • Swimming
Swimming is not prohibited while your piercing is healing, but you should only swim for short periods in pools that are thoroughly chlorine- or ozone-treated. If you swim in the ocean or waterways, do not swim after heavy rain since storm water run-off often contains bacteria and parasites.
  • Viral Infections
Viruses such as Hepatitis A, B, and C, and HIV can penetrate a piercing that has not healed. These viruses may be present in the blood, saliva, semen, sweat and vaginal secretions of infected persons. Until your piercing has healed avoid any other person's bodily fluids contacting your piercing.
  • Vitamins
Studies have shown that vitamin C and zinc promote wound healing. Aim for about 2000-3000 mg vitamin C and 100 mg zinc daily. Note that these amounts are not available in multivitamin tablets. Ask at your pharmacist or health-food store for advice on suitable products. If you are taking any medications, ask your pharmacist to make sure there are no interactions between them and the vitamin C and zinc you intend to take. For example, vitamin C can delay the absorption of the contraceptive pill - they should be taken at different times.
